A-Friend-Asked-Me-to-Help-Her-Write-a-Motivation-Letter-This-Is-the-Final-Result-You-Can-Also-Refer-To

A few weeks ago, a friend sent me a simple message:

“Please, can you help me write a motivation letter? I’ve rewritten it so many times and it still doesn’t feel right.”

If you’ve ever tried to write a motivation letter, you already know the struggle. You know your story. You know what you want. But putting it all together in a way that sounds confident, clear, and human is a completely different task.

That conversation turned into a full writing session, several edits, honest feedback, and eventually… a motivation letter she was proud to submit. And that’s what inspired this post.

If you’re currently stuck or about to write one, this will help you.

After several hours of sitting and wondering, this is the motivation letter sample I finally put together

For a lot of reasons, economic mismanagement, the greediness and selfishness of some houseowners and landlords, accessing affordable housing in cities, Accra included, has become very difficult. In my country, Ghana, the problem of affordable housing affects not only individuals who earn a meager salary but also students and professionals.

There was a time in my school years at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, when the prices for hostels had shot up unimaginably high. Having been working a side job to take care of myself was really a challenge. The rise in accommodation prices was a big blow to my academic performance as I had to work overtime to settle my bills. This experience particularly, had been the very one which made me grow more interested in the field of housing, property management, and sustainable urban development, which is a key goal in every housing sector as I studied in school, during my internships, and my National Service year. To carry this dream through, I have taken it upon myself to pursue a Master of Science degree in Construction and Real Estate Management to acquire a solid foundation in this field.

I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Real Estate from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Studying in this institution helped me develop a solid foundation in the management of land, the valuation of properties, and urban planning. During my final year project work, my thesis, titled “Assessment of the capacity of District Assemblies to effectively control Physical Development; A comparative study of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and Bosomtwe District in Kumasi,” helped me learn how to do good research and how to analyse problems critically.

I am a Ghanaian and have been working as an Estate Officer with Colony Energy in Accra, Ghana, over the past six months. In this company, my role involves taking part in the management of property, relations with tenants, and documentation of land.  The position I occupied in this company has given me exposure to learn more in real estate administration, the challenges involved in maintenance, and the settling of disputes between landlords and tenants.  Taking time out to ponder over all these encounters, I have come to understand that solving the problems associated with affordable housing requires not only practice but a strong academic training, exposure to more research and in-depth knowledge, and exposure to practices that are best globally.

In addition to my current role at Colony Energy, I have also had the experience during my National Service at the Valuation Unit of the Regional Lands Commission at Koforidua. During my National Service, I supported property valuation services and helped conduct property valuation processes over twenty-five sites. My internship experiences at DLA Investments Limited have further exposed me to the marketing of facilities, and management of facilities.

My decision to pursue an MSc in Construction and Real Estate Management is a result of my yearning to have a firm foundation to help brace my competence professionally, and also help meaningfully contribute to the housing system and property management practices.

Already, my undergraduate studies had academically provided me with a well-grounded foundation in thinking analytically and researching in relation to the real estate field. Working at Colony Energy has professionally taught me how take responsibilities, make decisions, and partake in teamwork. Having had the experience and acquired much knowledge in the field of real estate has also been a contribution to my motivation to continue in this MSc programme.

Life Cycle Management, Real Estate Development, Construction And Real Estate Technology, Business And Management Science, International And Intercultural, Collaboration And Leadership Competence, Sustainable Development, Renovation and Reconstruction are modules associated with Masters of Science in Construction and Real Estate Management at HTW Berlin UAS aligns with my field of study in real estate and my professional experience, which is a more reason why I want to study in your institution.

Another reason why I chose to study at HTW Berlin UAS is because of its strong academic reputation and curriculum. Germany’s global recognition for its excellence in engineering, construction, urban planning, and sustainable development, combined with its strong housing policies and planning systems, which makes it an ideal environment for me to advance studies in this field. Studying in Germany will help me gain more experience practically and also international perspectives that I intend to adapt to the Ghanaian context.

I trust that my dedication and the passion I have for this field put me in the right place for me to succeed in this programme. I am certain and itching to positively contribute to your university academically, and as well apply my skills and knowledge gained to address housing challenges in the actual world. I would welcome the opportunity to pursue my Master of Science degree at your institution.

Thank you for considering my application.

Why Motivation Letters Are Harder Than They Look

On the surface, a motivation letter may sound simple. Just explain who you are and why you’re applying, right? Guess what? In real life, most people face challenges because:

  • They don't know what to include and what to leave out
  • They just repeat what is already in their CV
  • They do not really know how to structure the letter to talk about both their past, their present day, and their future.
If you want to talk about the experiences, my friend had it all, but when it came to her story, it wasn't flowing. The letter actually just felt like a list, and that sounds so weird anytime you had to read it.

How I Approached the Letter

Instead of starting with “Dear Sir/Madam” and forcing words onto the page, I took some time and asked her a few important questions:

  • I asked her about her academic background and her professional background.
  • I asked her why she selected the particular program and why she decided to do it now and not later.
  • What problem is she trying to solve in her life and plans?
  • How the program she chose to offer fits into her future plans.

Once I had the answers right, preparing the letter was not difficult. All you need is a flow and good writing skills.

Final Thought

Most people already have a strong story they can use to write their motivation letter. The problem here is that they don't know how to tell it yet. If you ever need support writing a motivation letter, you can contact me using the details provided on the website's 'Contact Us' page.
